Sinopsis:
Uno de los nuestros narra la vida de Claude Wheeler, un joven americano del Medio Oeste que vive y trabaja en la granja familiar y al mismo tiempo estudia en una universidad cristiana.
No se siente satisfecho con las expectativas de su vida, y la relación con una familia liberal de inmigrantes alemanes le abrirá la mente a nuevos pensamientos e ideas, pero pronto tendrá que abandonar sus estudios para dirigir la hacienda. Cuando los Estados Unidos anuncian su entrada en la Primera Guerra Mundial, Claude se alista huyendo de la deriva tradicional a la que se ve abocado.
En Francia, en la batalla, encontrará la libertad que anhelaba. A través de la vida de los Wheeler, Willa Cather retrata a la gente sencilla de Nebraska, donde pasó su infancia, trabajadores de la tierra, de vida tranquila, y muestra cómo la Gran Guerra, en el aparentemente tan lejano Viejo Continente, acabó involucrando a los habitantes de los lugares más remotos.

– ¿Qué vas a hacer dentro de un tiempo, Ernest? ¿Tienes intención de trabajar la tierra toda tu vida?
– Naturalmente. Si hubiera aprendido un oficio, me dedicaría a ello a estas alturas. ¿Por que preguntas algo así?
– ¡Ah, no lo sé! Supongo que la gente debe pensar en el futuro alguna vez y tú eres una persona muy práctica.
– El futuro, ¿eh? – Ernest cerró un ojo y sonrió -. Eso son palabras mayores. Después de tener mi propio hogar y de haber sentado la cabeza, iré a casa a ver a mis viejos algún invierno. Quizá me case con alguna chica agradable y la traiga aquí.
– ¿Eso es todo?
– Es suficiente si todo sale bien, ¿no?
– Quizá, pero no bastaría para mí. Creo que nunca podría adaptarme a nada. ¿No tienes la sensación de que llegados a este punto no hay mucho más que merezca la pena en ello?
– ¿En qué?
– En la vida en general, en continuar como estamos. ¿Qué sacamos de todo ello? Coge un día como este: te levantas por la mañana y te alegras de estar vivo; es un día lo suficientemente bueno para hacer cualquier cosa y estás seguro de que algo va a pasar. Bueno, ya sea día de trabajo o festivo es lo mismo al final: por la noche te vas a la cama y nada ha pasado.
– ¿Pero qué es lo que esperas? ¿Qué puede pasarte, excepto en tu propia mente? Si termino el trabajo y consigo una tarde libre para ver a mis amigos como esta, para mí es suficiente.
– ¿Lo es? Bueno, si solo tenemos una oportunidad, me parece que debería pasar algo…, no sé, algo espléndido en la vida alguna vez.

(Willa Sibert Cather; Winchester, 1876 – Nueva York, 1947) Narradora estadounidense cuya obra revela gran sensibilidad poética y poder descriptivo al evocar sus recuerdos de infancia en Nebraska, la dura lucha contra la naturaleza de los inmigrantes colonizadores y las contradicciones entre la ciudad y la tierra.
Perteneció a una familia de origen irlandés y alsaciano, y pasó su infancia en Nebraska, durante la época en que esta región occidental fronteriza era colonizada por inmigrantes checos y escandinavos; en medio de aquellos aventureros y campesinos de sangre ardiente, de un vigor y afán de vivir netamente opuestos a la árida y convencional respetabilidad de los norteamericanos «indígenas» de la comarca, pasó Cather los años de su formación; de aquellos hombres captó las esencias de las virtudes humanas básicas: pasión, vitalidad espiritual, «valor personal, magnanimidad y una bella y generosa conducta».
Cather era de espíritu sensitivo y selectivo, y sus maestros en el ámbito de las letras fueron Flaubert y Henry James, mientras sus preferencias literarias instintivas se dirigían hacia los exquisitos artífices de la prosa, Hawthorne, Turguenev, Mérimée, Conrad y Stephen Crane. Obstinada e independiente ya desde la niñez, luego de haberse graduado en la Universidad de Nebraska se aprestó a vivir con la mayor intensidad, tanto en su patria como en el extranjero, y se ganó mientras tanto el sustento como periodista, maestra o directora de revistas.
Cuando, gracias al ejercicio de tales ocupaciones, hubo ahorrado suficiente dinero, dejó de trabajar para los demás y empezó a escribir en provecho propio. Su primera novela, Alexander’s Bridge (1912) -precedida, en 1903, por un tomo de poesías-, seguía la tradición de James, pero el resultado dejó mucho que desear. El año siguiente, con O Pioneers!, la autora descubrió efectivamente su propia personalidad y vio reflejados en ella los inmigrantes de sus años juveniles.
Publicó a continuación una serie de narraciones poco significativas, hasta que volvió la vista al pasado, que trató de reflejar en novelas o crónicas literarias, tales como La muerte y el arzobispo (1927), situada en el ambiente del sudoeste hispano-católico, y Sombras en la roca (Shadows on the Rock, 1931), cuya acción se desarrolla en la francocatólica Quebec. Estas obras figuran entre las más bellas de esta autora. Viajó mucho por Europa y América y pasó los últimos años de su vida en Nueva York. Publicó también un volumen de ensayos titulado No antes de los cuarenta (Not Under Forty, 1936).
