Émile Zola defendió una literatura de corte científico que emplease la naturaleza como espejo para retratar los dramas y las pasiones humanas, en la que la subjetividad del autor desapareciera tanto como fuera posible, y que recibiría el nombre de naturalismo. Su aspiración fue realizar una novela fisiológica, que, en los últimos años, derivó hacia ideas progresistas influida por las teorías utópicas de Comte, Fourier y Proudhon.

Émile Zola fue un escritor francés que nació en París el 2 de abril de 1840 y que falleció en la misma ciudad el 29 de septiembre de 1902.
Considerado el líder del movimiento literario llamado naturalismo: un realismo extremo basado en la descripción y en las teorías fisiológicas de pensadores como Hippolyte Taine.
Nacido en el seno de una familia poco adinerada, abandonó los estudios para ponerse a trabajar como administrativo, pero no tardó en empezar a colaborar con artículos en diversos medios. Conectado en un principio con el Romanticismo, sus primeras obras fueron relatos que se publicaron bajo el título de Cuentos a Ninon (1864), y una novela autobiográfica de tintes románticos llamada La confesión de Claude (1865).
Como colaborador del periódico L’Evénement comenzó a realizar crítica pictórica, interesándose por la pintura impresionista y contrayendo amistad con los nuevos artistas de la época. Interesado en la obra de Balzac y en las teorías de Taine, desarrolló un concepto de novela diferente, donde reflejaba en gran detalle la vida de una familia a lo largo de varias generaciones: llevó este concepto a la práctica con la serie Los Rougon-Macquart, que se extendió a lo largo de veinte novelas; y en varias otras obras como La obra o Nana.
Comenzó a implicarse en política con el notorio artículo Yo acuso, en el que se involucraba en el famoso Caso Dreyfus, lo que le costó un proceso por difamación y su retiro a Londres. Tras regresar a París siguió publicando artículos sobre el caso, falleciendo finalmente asfixiado en su casa, posiblemente asesinado.

Germinal
El maquinista Étienne Lantier llega al pueblo minero de Montsou en busca de trabajo. Lleno de indignación ante la miseria que rodea el mundo de las minas, promueve la lucha contra la Compañía alzándose en cabecilla de una protesta que acabará convirtiéndose en un torrente de violencia devastadora.
Emile Zola (1840-1902) quiso escribir en «Germinal» una novela social que describiese la lucha del trabajo frente al capital. En ella recoge, de una forma descarnada y negra, ese mundo sombrío y mísero que estalló en las revueltas obreras del último tercio del siglo xix.
Naná
En el París febril y deslumbrante del Segundo Imperio todo el mundo habla de Naná, la nueva estrella del Teatro de Variedades. Su atractivo es irresistible, su ambición, enorme, pero más allá del brillo de la vida mundana se ocultan también la miseria, el sufrimiento y las tragedias personales.

Sin embargo, su faceta como cuentista, tanto o más interesante que la anterior, había quedado relegada a un injusto segundo plano del que esta edición pretende rescatarlo.
