Quinta novela de Faulkner, Mientras agonizo es una de sus obras maestras y uno de los libros por los que sentía más aprecio. Lo escribió, según él mismo explicaba, en seis frenéticas semanas, de madrugada, mientras trabajaba como bombero y vigilante nocturno de la central eléctrica de la Universidad de Mississippi. Relata la peripecia de una familia de blancos pobres, los Bundren, que recorren los parajes rurales del Sur con el cadáver de la esposa y madre en un ataúd para enterrarla en una parcela de su propiedad. Esta aventura tragicómica, en la que se entremezcla un humor de tintes ácidos con la más arrolladora desolación, está narrada mediante una sucesión de monólogos interiores de los diversos personajes: el patriarca familiar, los hijos y la propia muerta, que habla al lector desde «el otro lado», desde el más allá. Y es en este viaje con ecos grotescos de la Odisea homérica y de episodios bíblicos, Faulkner introduce los temas y obsesiones que fecundan su literatura: la decadencia del Sur, el viaje iniciático, la culpa que atormenta a los personajes, la transgresión y su castigo, el peso opresivo del pasado.

Escritor estadounidense, William Faulkner es considerado como uno de los más grandes autores del siglo XX, galardonado en 1949 con el Premio Nobel de Literatura y considerado como uno de los padres de la novela contemporánea.
Nacido en el Sur de los Estados Unidos, Faulkner no llegó a acabar los estudios y luchó en la I Guerra Mundial como piloto de la RAF. Como veterano tuvo la oportunidad de entrar en la universidad pero al poco tiempo decidió dedicarse por completo a la literatura.
Tras cambiar habitualmente de trabajo, Faulkner publicó su antología de cuentos La paga de los soldados (1926) tras encontrar cierta estabilidad económica como periodista en Nueva Orleans. Poco después comenzaría a publicar sus primeras novelas en las que reflejó ese Sur que tan bien conocía; El ruido y la furia (1929) es la más conocida de este periodo. Luego llegarían obras tan famosas como Luz de agosto (1932), ¡Absalón, Absalón! (1936) o El villorrio (1940).
Santuario (1931) fue, a la larga, su novela más vendida y la que le permitió dedicarse a la escritura de guiones para Hollywood. Sus cuentos más conocidos de esta época pueden leerse en ¡Desciende, Moisés! escrito en 1942.
Como guionista, habría que destacar su trabajo en Vivamos hoy (1933), Gunga Din (1939) o El sueño eterno (1946).
En el apartado de premios, Faulkner tuvo un reconocimiento tardío aunque generalizado. Además del ya nombrado Nobel de Literatura también recibió el Pulitzer en 1955 y el National Book Award, este entregado ya de manera póstuma por la edición de sus Cuentos completos.
