Escrita en 1947, La viuda es la primera novela del autor, que vio la luz en Portugal con el título de Terra do pecado por decisión del editor. Hoy, cuando se cumple el centenario del autor, se publica por primera vez en español, respetando su título original.
Sinopsis:
Tras la muerte de su marido, Maria Leonor, madre de dos hijos, se siente abrumada ante las dificultades para administrar su hacienda en el Alentejo, las expectativas de la sociedad y el férreo control de su entorno. Después de unos meses sumida en una profunda depresión, decide finalmente afrontar su responsabilidad como propietaria de las tierras, pero su corazón está atormentado por un pecado secreto: a pesar del duelo, su deseo no se ha apagado.
Entre cavilaciones sobre la esencia del amor, el paso del tiempo y los deslumbrantes cambios en la naturaleza, la joven viuda pasa las noches en vela, espiando los amores de sus criadas y padeciendo la soledad propia. Hasta que dos hombres muy distintos irrumpen en su vida y su destino se tambalea inesperadamente.

Conoce a José Saramago:
José Saramago (Azinhaga, 1922- Lanzarote, 2010) periodista y escritor, en su juventud sufrió la censura por su militancia en el partido comunista portugués y formó parte activa de la mítica Revolución de los Claveles.
Profundamente escéptico en su intelectualidad, ha mantenido un ética por encima de partidos y comprometida con el género humano. El conjunto de su producción literaria le ha consagrado como autor universal, gracias a su capacidad para idear un mundo propio y a su originalidad creativa que, junto con su controvertida visión de la historia y la cultura, le han proporcionado un sinfín de galardones, entre los que destaca, con voz propia, el premio Nobel de Literatura.
Tras recibir el Nobel de Literatura su proyección se hizo mundial y su figura alcanzó nuevos niveles de polémica al manifestar, sin ningún tipo de tapujo, sus ideas en contra de la política neoconservadora, la actitud de la Iglesia Católica y a favor de los pueblos más desfavorecidos.
Sus últimas obras fueron grandes éxitos, como El viaje del Elefante (2008) y Caín (2009), con la que volvió a levantar voces airadas en el Vaticano. También hay que destacar sus publicaciones en su blog, o cuaderno personal, que también fueron recogidas en forma de libro.
